Greenway
Greenway is still full of the Christie family's belongings, and its gardens drop steeply to the Dart.
Learn more about Greenway on Google MapsGalmpton has always had a working relationship with the water. The creek yard built over two hundred of Brixham's trawling smacks, and boats are still worked on there. Some people here keep a boat, others walk by the Dart most days or spend weekends in the garden, and their bedrooms fill up with waterproofs, fleeces and boots as well as everyday clothes. A fitted wardrobe in a Galmpton bungalow can take all of that, with a ventilated section for damp kit kept apart from the good clothes. In the limestone cottages along the Stoke Gabriel Road, the challenge is smaller rooms and thick walls. We make both kinds at our Barton workshop and bring them over.
Tell us roughly what you have in mind and we will arrange a time to come and measure. A photo of the space on your phone is usually enough to start with.
The Joiner Behind It
Galmpton wardrobes often need room for more than clothes: kit for the boat, walking gear for the Dart, coats that come back damp. The bungalows and stone cottages here handle that differently.
As a child Luke was already doing joinery, the family trade. Fitting storage to how people actually live is something experience teaches. Luke and the team ask about your gear before they draw a single shelf.
Galmpton
When the farmland around Galmpton was sold in the 1960s, the village grew about fivefold, and most of the new homes in Galmpton Glade, Vale Close and Barnfield Close were bungalows. Their bedrooms are on the ground floor, with standard ceilings and fairly straight walls, which makes a wall-to-wall wardrobe a simple fit. The thought goes into the inside: where the outdoor kit lives, how long the hanging needs to be for a full-length waterproof, and whether a section can be left with a slatted base so wet things dry.
The older houses tell a different story. The seventeenth-century cottages and the 1860s Harvey cottages have thick limestone walls, smaller bedrooms and sometimes a sloping ceiling. Wardrobes there are scribed to the stone and kept modest. Owners of those cottages often have the windows to think about too, and our page on timber windows and doors in Galmpton covers the conservation area side.
The Case For It
One bay with a ventilated back and slatted shelf keeps damp waterproofs and fleeces away from everything else.
Full-length drops for waterproofs and winter coats, with double hanging alongside for shirts.
Low shelves or pull-out racks with a wipeable base for boots and shoes.
Rails and drawers set at comfortable heights, so nothing needs a step to reach.
In the older houses, wardrobes follow the limestone walls and fit under low ceilings and beams.
Near the creek, walls can be damp. We seal the back of every carcass and leave an air gap on outside walls.
Before You Choose
Tell the maker what you actually need to store, outdoor gear included. If a quote assumes only everyday clothes, the wardrobe will be full before it is finished.
Ask how damp items will be dealt with. A ventilated section, kept apart from the rest, stops wet kit from making everything else smell of the river.
For a cottage, ask how the wardrobe will be fixed to the stone and how it will meet an uneven wall. Our fitted wardrobes page explains how we scribe and fix.

Our Process
A Galmpton wardrobe goes through these seven steps, from the first look round to a check after the first winter.
We measure the room and ask about outdoor kit, boots and long coats as well as clothes.
Blockwork in the bungalows, limestone in the cottages. Each takes a different fixing.
A plan with each bay marked, including any ventilated section, plus a fixed price.
Boards and timber settle in the workshop so doors stay flat in a warm bedroom.
Built and assembled on the bench, then split for delivery.
Painted or lacquered before it reaches Galmpton.
Installed and scribed in a day for most bungalows. We come back after a winter to adjust doors.

typical fitted wardrobe run
Bungalow wardrobes in Galmpton usually sit in the lower to middle part of our range. A ventilated kit bay adds a little. Cottage wardrobes scribed to stone walls take longer to fit. For ranges across all our work, see the joinery cost guide.

What moves the priceStraight walls and good parking in Galmpton Glade, Vale Close and Barnfield Close keep fitting simple.
Thick limestone walls and narrow lanes near the Stoke Gabriel Road add time to fitting day.
Ventilated kit bays, pull-out boot racks and internal lights each add a modest amount.

“Our bedroom is in one of the old Warberries villas and the back wall bows by about an inch and a half across four metres. Two national firms measured it, quoted, then went quiet. These came, measured, and said it needed scribing rather than filling. The wardrobes go right into the corner and there is no gap anywhere. My husband keeps running his hand down the join.”

“We run a bar on the harbourside and needed the counter and back fittings replaced without losing a summer weekend. They built the lot off site, came in on a Sunday night and had us trading by Tuesday lunchtime. Knowing the whole thing was made before they ever shut our doors is what sold it.”

“Sash windows on the front elevation, and we are in a conservation area so it had to be timber and it had to match. They took a profile off the original, made new boxes in accoya, and the planning side went through without a query. From the pavement you genuinely cannot tell which is which.”

“Two alcoves either side of the chimney, and they turned out to be 40mm different in width, which explains why the flat-pack ones we tried first never sat right. Made as a pair but to two different sets of measurements. Small thing, but it is the difference between looking fitted and looking bought.”

“We let our place out over the season so everything gets hammered. I asked them to over-specify the drawer runners and they did, and told me exactly which ones so I can order spares. Three summers in, nothing has sagged. The last kitchen we had did not last two.”
